Most of my clients are Successful Leaders. They are very intelligent, dedicated and persistent. They are committed to the success of their companies. They have high personal integrity and they realise that the leadership behaviour that was associated with yesterday's results may not be the behaviour needed to achieve tomorrow's successes. While most of us can easily see how others need to change their behaviour, we often have great difficulty in changing ourselves. As we become more successful, it seems even harder to change. In that lies the paradox of Success. As Charles Handy pointed out: "The things and the ways which got you where you are, seldom are the things to keep you there". So, leaders need to change before they have to change.
However, when things are going well, it is hard to propel oneself to change.
To produce effective behavioural change, one has to:
Have the desire to keep improving oneself
Understand perceptions and behaviours that are limiting
Break habits and replace behaviours
Specially alone. This is often what we feel when we are in a leadership position, or when we face a situation that seems too new for us. We tend to exaggerate the hardness of circumstances. Or we mitigate the importance of dealing with the situation in a different way. So we fall into our habits, that proven to be so useful in the past.
Let the world adapt to us instead.
